The 1898 is a truly unique event venue housed within a beautiful stone Richardsonian Romanesque style architectural gem. Originally built as a private residence in 1898, the venue has been restored to the grandeur that was the height of the Gilded Age.
Whether you’re celebrating a wedding or hosting a private dinner party with friends, our beautifully appointed, formal spaces provide the perfect backdrop for curating special moments and taking those memorable photos.

When you book your wedding at The 1898, you can enjoy exclusive use of the entire first floor of the mansion, including:
- The Reception Hall and Grand Staircase
- Formal Dining Room
- The Library
- The Parlor
- The Bar
Smaller weddings and vow renewals can utilize the Grand Staircase’s elevated landing for a one-of-a-kind picturesque location for an intimate ceremony.
Bridal Parties at The 1898 can enjoy a Glam Room equipped with three vanity stations. In addition, The Bridal Party will have access to two bedroom suites and a full bathroom. One suite overlooks the Wedding Garden from the second floor so that the bride can easily view the progress below.
Located on the grounds of THE 1898 you’ll find a spacious and beautifully manicured Wedding Garden. Offering great flexibility, the Wedding Garden can be used for a variety of events including wedding receptions, parties, dining and dancing. A band can be set up on the elevated stage or the rear paved area of the garden. The large lawn adjacent to the Wedding Garden can also be activated for a variety of uses, such as lawn games, picnics and more.
The 1898 is located just two blocks south of Main Street in downtown Van Wert, Ohio. The Venue is situated on a large lot with plenty of space for outdoor events.
We offer indoor / outdoor ceremony and reception locations for weddings. The interior of the mansion can accommodate up to 65 guests. For larger events, the outdoor Wedding Garden can seat up to 288 guests, with a maximum of 300 guests on the entire property.
